May 2003
In the past four days we've played three shows, all unique events which we were invited back to perform at from previous occasions. On May 15 we took back the night for the 6th year in a row (and still haven't written our Take Back the Night theme song). Lasting a record-breaking 25 minutes, the performance went past UCLA residential life "quiet hours," marking a rare, disobedient and jovial occurance. Raining Jane truly shines when we carry out minor acts of subversion like this one. The Clothesline Project and Take Back the Night are really important events that take place annually at UCLA. Our performance followed the "speak-out" portion of the evening, when victims and their family and friends are given the opportunity to speak out against acts of violence and abuse. It is a very emotional, powerful and inspiring experience to witness this, and performing after it puts us in a delicate position. Our set started with the slower more serious songs and became progressively upbeat and fun. The audience was obviously craving to be uplifted -- and so they did by getting up and dancing!
Setlist: Diamond Lane, Brave Face, Turn Your Lights Down Low (Bob Marley), Fashionable, Are You That Somebody (Aaliyah).
Three days later we had two shows, at 8am and 8pm. The morning gig was for UCLA Walk, a walk-a-thon benefiting UCLA's Children's Hospital. We shared two one hour slots (8-9am, 10-11am) with Sara Bareilles, each taking a half hour. Does that make sense? It was really fun -- and hard to get up so early on a friggin' Sunday, but more importantly, it was for a good cause. Playing outside in Westwood Plaza is always a treat, and we got free Naked Juice and met some nice people.
Later that early evening we headed over to Westwood Brew Co, where we were scheduled to play 8-8:30pm but ended up starting at like 9:15?! We headlined the "Acoustic Live" lineup: Kelda, Gabriel Mann, Carla Werner, Steve Reynolds, Raining Jane. A guy was there taping the show, which he's taking to pitch to some people in Japan. We'll get back to you as soon as we find out what that's about. All in all it was a pretty great night especially considering how tired we were from the morning! We had a very supportive constituency of fans and friends who stuck around to see us, demanding multiple encores. We love you too!
Setlist: Diamond Lane (debut new intro), Brave Face, Invisible Spoon (debut new intro), War (live debut), Baby Bird, Fashionable; encore: Big Girl, Both Hands, Are You That Somebody.
