Wednesday, 10.22.03 : Hollywood - The Troubadour
Last night we played the Troubadour for the first time. It was an amazing, entertaining and challenging night. It would have been great if all our fans could have been there last night, not just to see us, but to see the audience. It looked like Halloween: black and white make-up, mesh shirts, top hats, corsets, lots of black clothes. The headlining band, Rasputina (female-led, cellos, drums, experimental goth), has a large following - people fully decked out in doom/gloom gear. It was awesome, and hilarious. Hilarious that there we were, nearly the total opposite of these people, opening the night. It was such a different crowd for us, and we did our best to crack a smile onto the faces of these very serious folk. Not everyone was spooky-somber-goth-person, and many of them did respond to our music. Towards the end of the set when we played our cover of Aaliyahıs ³Are You That Somebody?² people started to get us and some ice was broken. Quite a few people approached us after the show to say they enjoyed the set. Despite the differences in musical style and fashion, two particular things helped build bridges that night: all the bands involved at least one cello and/or violin, and each band featured rockinı women.

The big bummer of the night (which is unfortunate but not the worst thing in the world) was that tickets sold out before we even started playing. Many of our fans didnıt get in. We were quite dismayed by this but couldnıt do anything about it. Some people did get in, and it meant so much to us to have familiar faces out there in the audience. You were all so supportive, and we needed it for our debut at the Troubadour and with that audience!

Other bands of the evening were Stolen Babies and Bonfire Madigan. Everyone we talked to in the other bands, and all the Troubadour people were really nice. As we left the venue, I looked up at the marquee to take a picture with our name on it and they had already put up the names for the next night! Weıll just have to get back in there and play again.

Setlist: Diamond Lane, Brave Face, Deep In My Pocket, Fashionable, IM Love, Birthday Malaise Seven Nation Army Are You That Somebody?, Window Song, Invisible Spoon (featuring the kickass Josh Day on drums).
